Contains global harware information and application settings of users who log on. This key has got 3 aliases at root level :

HKLM's subkeys include :
Config   Contains the various hardware profiles visible in the Control Panel System icon.
Enum   Lists the data found in the Device Manager. Each hardware class has it own subkey, as well as each device present in the system.
Hardware   Contains hardware information.
Network   Contains remote access information, especially network type and default user name.
Security   Contains network security and remote access device information.
Software   Contains information about installed applications.
System   Contains information about the current control set.
 
System : NT, 2K
Contains information specific to the machine. Windows NT 4.0's registry contains keys related to the security system SAM. Those keys can not be edited with RegEdit. You must use the User Manager.
Hardware   Contains detailed information about system hardware configuration and local devices, for example SCSI devices.
SAM   Contains the data of the account security manager.
Security   Contains application security information.
Software   Contains information about installed applications.
System   Contains information about the current control set as well as previously defined hardware configurations.
